Lukla serves as the main starting and ending point for anyone trekking to Everest Base Camp. Perched at 2,840 meters, this vibrant mountain town connects travelers to spectacular views of peaks like Dudhkunda and Kongde, while offering plenty of cozy lodges, bakeries, and bars to celebrate the journey.

While you can reach Lukla by overland jeep or bus combined with a multi-day walk, most visitors prefer a quick flight from Kathmandu or Ramechhap into Tenzing Hillary Airport. Known worldwide for its dramatic cliffside runway, the local airport handles morning flights when weather permits, alongside helicopter services that provide backup travel options.

Lukla is a small town in the Everest region. It is the gateway to Everest Base Camp, and Most Everest Base Camp trekkers and climbers start here after flying from Kathmandu Airport to Tenzing-Hillary Airport.

The town is 2,860 m above sea level and separates the Solu and Khumbu regions. It is in the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality of the Solukhumbu district. Lukla means the place of many sheep and goats, but there are now more shops and guesthouses. However, we can still find some of them.

Trekkers stop for their last night in Lukla after returning from the base camp before flying back to Kathmandu. Numerous bakeries and bars offer places to celebrate the last night of the Everest Base Camp trek in Lukla.

Lukla's small airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. It is located above a cliffside on the lap of a big hill. The runway is short and steep. Several airlines operate flights to this airport. The flights usually depart in the morning on a clear day.

Rescue and helicopter tour flights use a helipad on the side of the airport for refueling. If regular flights are canceled, helicopters are an alternative to Lukla.

When you land at the Lukla airport, you will have a great view of Dudhkunda Peak and Mt. Fari. Dudh Kunda Peak is also called Numbur Himal. It is in the Rolwaling Himalayan range in Nepal. Mt. Fari also has another name. Most people call it Kongde Peak.
