Tamang Heritage Trek is a cultural Trek in the Langtang Himalaya that offers insights into the lifestyle, culture, and rural activities of the Tamang people of the mountain region. This new trekking route is less popular than the other commercial regions, but it is a beautiful, moderate-level Trek in Nepal. Not just the locals' culture, religion, and tenor, but also the attractive hills, forests, rivers, valleys, water, mountains, and other natural resources make the trek an extreme experience for visitors.

The Tamang Heritage Trail is about 140km north of Kathmandu and follows a hillside road to Syabrubesi. The Langtang Valley Trek begins from the same place to the right of Syabrubesi, but the Tamang Heritage Trail goes to the left.

The trek to the Tamang Heritage Trail starts with a steep 3-hour climb from Syabrubesi to Goljung Bhanjyang, then continues on a flat stretch along a rough road to Gatlang on the first day. Gatlang is a big Tamang village with hundreds of traditional buildings. You can see wooden plank roofs on those buildings, which can be an extra memory from this Trek.

The Tamang heritage journey continues to Tatopani after Gatlang village. Tatopani used to have a natural hot spring, but it is no longer there after a big earthquake on 25 April 2015. From this area, you can see Ganesh Himal and Siringi Himal. Chilime Valley and farming terraces look fabulous on a day when you walk from Gatlang to Tatopani.

Nagthali is a hill station that offers stunning mountain views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and the Tibetan massif. It is not just the Himalayas; beautiful valleys, the village of Thuman, green hills, and other attractions look outstanding from Nagthali. A couple of hours' walk to the north from Nagthali, you reach one viewpoint, from where you can see Tibetan villages and long-range mountains.

You can end the Trek to Syabrubesi by walking from Nagthali in a day, hiking a few more days through Bridim, or combining it with a trek to the Langtang Valley.

Frolic Adventure operates a Trek to Tamang Heritage with an experienced, English-speaking guide with a government license. The helpers who carry your trekking gear are beneficial and honest, so start packing for the trip and contact us if you have any questions.

You will visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka Palace), Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath (Open Cremation), and Bouddhanath out of 10, then return to the hotel to stay after managing and packing trekking gear.

Day 3

Drive from Kathmandu to Sybrubensi (1,500 m / 4,921 feet) 6-8 hrs.

As we start our road trip, we head into the remote hills, passing through settlements such as Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche. The road to Sybrubensi is a tight affair, with most of it narrow and bumpy, and not the best in the country. While it is challenging during the monsoon, with the tracks carved into a ridge in the hills, all muddy, these roads make the trip enticing, with the ravines and valleys and the Trishuli River flowing terrifyingly below our track. Overnight stay at Sybrubensi.

The first stop of the day is a viewpoint offering majestic views of the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Shishapangma (8,013 m), and the Gosainkunda range. Another couple of hours along the valley, dotted with Chortens and prayer flags, will take us to Gatlang. Overnight stay at Gatlang.

The trek starts in Gatlang village, then descends the valley to Thambuchet. We cross a suspension bridge onto a trail that ascends to Tatopani. Tatopani, meaning "Hot Water," suggests we dip into the soothing water after a day on the course. As you hike, you will glimpse Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung (7,227 m). Overnight stay at Tatopani.

Headed for the highest point of the Tamang Heritage trek, we take the trail to Nagthali. It is hilltop grassland, high and open, with majestic views of the Ganesh, Langtang, and Kerung ranges, among others. We start the ascent from Tatopani, cutting through the lush green alpine forest and arriving at Brimdang village. We then ascend further to Nagthali village. Overnight stay at Nagthali.

We continue on a flat trail as we descend to Timure (a trade point en route to Tibet). We pass through a rhododendron forest and fall further to Briddhim. This is another village with a strong Tibetan influence, home to the Dukchu Monastery. Overnight stay at Briddhim.

Once in Kathmandu, we check back into our hotel before we venture into the Thamel market and experience the Nepali hustle on the penultimate day of this trip—farewell dinner with the Frolic Adventure team at a typical Nepali restaurant.
