Lukla
Lukla is a little town in the Everest region. It is the gateway to the Everest base camp. Most Everest base camp trekkers and climbers start walking from this town after flying to Tenzin-Hilary airport from Kathmandu airport.
The town separates the Solu and Khumbu regions, and its elevation is 2,860m above sea level. Lukla is in the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality of the Solukhumbu district. Lukla means the place of many sheep and goats, but there are more shops and guesthouses now. Although, we still can find some of them.
The trekkers stop for the last night after returning from the base camp in Lukla before taking the flight back to Kathmandu. There are numerous bakery shops and bars to celebrate the last night of the Everest base camp trek in Lukla.
Lukla has a small airport, considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world. The Lukla airport is right above a cliffside and on the lap of a big hill. It has a short and steep runway. Several different airline companies are operating flights to this airport. The flights usually fly in the morning on a clear day.
There is a helipad on the side of this airport where the rescue and Heli tour helicopters land for refueling. If the regular flights cancel, the helicopters are alternative flights to go and come to Lukla.
When you land at the Lukla airport, you will have a great view of Dudhkunda peak and Mt. Fari. Dudh Kunda peak is also called Numbur Himal. It is in the Rolwaling Himalayan range in Nepal. Mt. Fari also has another name. Most people call it Kongde peak.
How to Reach Lukla
There are several ways of reaching Lukla from Kathmandu. You can drive to Jiri by bus or Salleri by Jeep and walk to Lukla. It takes a few days to get to Lukla with overland transportation. Although, a Rough road has been constructed up to Tham Danda. It is one day's walking distance from Tham Danda to Lukla.
The fastest way to reach Lukla from Kathmandu is through the airways. There are regular flights from Kathmandu so that you can fly to Tenzing-Hilary airport. Also, you can take a helicopter ride to Lukla from Kathmandu. Alternatively, you can fly to Lukla from Ramechhap (Manthali). You can Reach Manthali in about a 5 hours drive from Kathmandu.
